The scalable interface that can change to customize the application for the user is a defining feature of the program. Please read the Preference Sets sections to take full advantage of it. The included preference sets are only examples. Until you decide your users should choose from a list of preferences, Canvastic will start up using a default set of preferences.

By installing Canvastic you agree to the terms contained in the Canvastic End User License Agreement.

  1. Locate your downloaded file from canvastic.com.
  2. Double-click the file to decompress it.
  3. Drag the resulting folder to the desired location on your hard drive. Do not move any of the enclosed folders or files to other locations.
  4. You may wish to add the Canvastic application icon to the Dock (Macintosh OS X) or create a shortcut (Windows) to it on your desktop to make it easy to find. See your computer's help system for specific directions.
  5. You may wish to make an archival copy of the Canvastic folder on another disk before you begin using it.
  6. Canvastic will function in Demo Mode (no saving or printing) until registered. . To register, choose Register from the Help menu. Enter your registration name and code EXACTLY as given. Note that registration codes are platform specific. If you are installing Canvastic on Macintosh and Windows computers please request a "mixed-platform" code.
  7. Registration and preference settings should be made while logged into your computer as an administrator. Limited users will not be able to make those kinds of changes.

The only files installed by Canvastic are the ones in the Canvastic folder. Do not move any of the files within the Canvastic folder unless directed by this documentation. Do not rename any of the files with the exception of the preference sets, which are in the Preferences folder or the Preferences Library folder. They can be named anything that is appropriate. 1st_Grade, 2nd_Grade etc. and K preference sets are just examples. It is expected that teachers will change these sets to meet the needs of their students (see the Preference Sets section). Be sure to keep the .cpf at the end of those file names if you change them.

Turning off Default Preferences:

Canvastic will function using a default set of preferences which is close to a 4th grade level unless you decide to use multiple levels of use. If you wish your users to be able to pick the preference set they will use, see the directions for that in the Preference Sets section. If you have students of different ages using Canvastic you will want to have a selection of preference sets for them to choose from. This is one of Canvastic's signature features. It grows with the user. You can customize the work environment for any level user. Example sets ranging from Kindergarten to Advanced are provided.

Note: Students may benefit from the Student Introduction to Publishing with Canvastic Lesson before using the program.

Note: If your school purchased a multiple seat license, you should have received directions that will aid in installing Canvastic on multiple computers. You can request those directions here.

The Installed Canvastic Folder

  • The Canvastic folder that was installed holds everything needed for the program to work. Note that besides the actual application, Read Me file, license, and documentation there are several important folders which should not be moved or re- named.
  • The Art folder contains the clip art images. You can add images to this folder. Your images should be in a format that is common (jpg, gif, png etc.). You may want to either add them to one of the category folders already there or create your own category folder. You must quit and re-launch Canvastic for new images to be recognized by the program.
  • The Backgrounds folder contains the images that can be placed into the background layer of a Canvastic document. You can add images to this folder. Your images should be in a format that is common (jpg, gif, png etc.) or a Canvastic document. You may want to either add them to one of the category folders already there or create your own category folder. You must quit and re-launch Canvastic for new images to be recognized by the program.
  • The Extras folder contains various resources. Clip Art, promotional material, and more project specific preference sets.
  • The Music folder contains the sound files that can be used with the Slide Show function. You can add music files to this folder. Your music should be in a mp3 format. Do not use folders inside the Music folder. You must quit and re- launch Canvastic for new sounds to be recognized by the program.
  • The Preferences folder contains the preference files that control how Canvastic looks and works. See the
documentation section on Preferences for detailed information on adjusting Preferences.
  • The Templates folder contains the Canvastic template documents that can be used to launch new untitled documents with particular content already in the document. You can add templates to this folder. Your templates must be saved by using the Save As Template command under the File menu. You may want to either add them to one of the category folders already there or create your own category folder. You must quit and re-launch Canvastic for new templates to be recognized by the program.
