How can I use my large digital photographs in Canvastic easily?
Almost everyone is using digital photography these days and Canvastic
has some features and functions that make viewing, using, and presenting
them fun and easy. Canvastic does not currently have controls for
editing digital photos extensively but getting them into a document
or slide show is super simple. The problem is usually that the photo
is way too large for any document without cropping or scaling, re-saving
etc.
Slide Shows: Select Slide Show... from the File
menu and use the selection button to "add all pictures from
a folder..." Navigate to the folder holding your photos and
they will be brought in as separate slides. The slides will be scaled
automatically to the size of your document. The example image shows
the slide show dialog 15 seconds after collecting 50 photos.

Background Picture: Inserting a photo into the
background layer will automatically scale it to document size as
well. Select Background... from the Settings menu. Choose Picture.
Navigate to the photo you want to use and select it. The photo will
be scaled and inserted into the background. Add annotations and
other graphic items. The example image started out as a 10 megapixel
photo.

Lesson Plan
Title: Google Maps on a Canvastic Canvas
Description
This lesson will provide the opportunity for the students to find
and capture a satellite image of a desired region and then add predetermined
graphical items to that base map using Canvastic's graphics and
text capabilities. This activity addresses social studies standards
for 2nd-8th grades though adjustments for different ages is appropriate,
of course.
It uses the mapping and satellite imagery resources availble throught
Google's online mapping feataure (maps.google.com)
and/or Google Earth, the free desktop application (earth.google.com).
Procedure
1. Capture the satellite image from Google Maps or Google Earth.
For younger students the teacher should do this in advance.
- Full instructions for each of these systems can be found either
at the web site on in the program. You will need to use screen
capture procedures on the web site while Google Earth allows you
save your map directly from the file menu.
- Locate the map where students can find it easily on your computer
system.
2. Insert the satellite image into the background layer of a new
Canvastic document. See the tip in this issue for directions on
this.
3. Have students use the graphics and text tools to add items to
the map. Some suggestions are:
- cardinal directions
- Road names
- City names
- Local features; rivers, lakes, beaches, parks, schools, homes,
stores, community centers
- borders
- latitude and longitude lines
- paths from location to location
- historical sites
- amusement parks
4. Print, share and post your students' work.
Needs and Preparation
- Introduce the graphics and text tools in Canvastic first.
- Captured satellite images for younger students.
- List of items to be added to map.
