Lesson Description:
Wanted Poster has the students create a flyer for a character from
a book they have read. The imaginary situation is that their favorite
character has developed amnesia and must be found. Using the publishing
tools in Canvastic the students not only draw the character's likeness
but write in a descriptive paragraph about him/her. Wanted Poster
will take 2-4 sessions. See the example.
Implementation Steps:
Explain the concept of wanted posters. Some may have seen real
ones at the post office. Search for "wanted poster" on
www.google.com/images
for some quick visual aides. And initiate some humor about the fact
that our posters will read something like "WANTED ALIVE AND
WELL".
Have the students choose their favorite character from the most
recent book read or assign one. Have then get into small groups
and brainstorm some facts and details about the characters that
might help the public find him.
On their Canvastic document have them arrange the different areas
of the flyer. Traditionally, the Wanted line is at the top, then
the picture then the details. Make sure they leave plenty of room
for the details section as theirs will be in paragraph format.
Have them complete the poster. Depending on the dynamics of the
group you may want them to write first and paint second or vice
versa.
Some desktop publishing skills can be taught in this activity such
as when to use all caps (in the wanted line), when to center text,
what fonts might be most appropriate, whether to use all black and
white or to use color.
Preparation Notes:
The students should have the book that their character comes from
with them during the project. They can use it for detail research.
Depending upon the preference set that your class uses with Canvastic,
you may to change the canvas' orientation. Use the Settings Menu
> Canvas Size... command to change it. See the online help
for details.
Student Prerequisites:
The students should be familiar with the paint and text tools in
Canvastic.
Assessment:
Use your usual writing rubric (4th gr. example
is posted here) and evaluate the detail of the character's picture.
